Toddler activities with a spoon

Spoons are the first real tool a toddler masters, and they are good for far more than eating. Stirring a bowl of dry rice, carrying a spoonful of cotton balls across the room without dropping them, drumming on an upturned pan. The activities on this page all use a spoon, wooden or metal, as the main prop. They build the wrist control and grip that self-feeding depends on and give a small child the satisfying feeling of doing a grown-up thing. Each one lists what else you need, which is never much.
