Two Spoons at Breakfast
What you need
- two spoons
- their bowl of breakfast
How to do it
- Give your toddler their own spoon and keep a second one for yourself.
- Let them have a go with theirs whenever they want to.
- In between their tries, feed them a spoonful with yours.
- Keep it relaxed. You're sharing the job, not taking it over.
Why it matters
Two spoons means they get to practise and still actually eat their breakfast, so nobody gets hungry or frustrated while the skill catches up.
What they're learning
- Spoon to mouth
- Their own spoon in their own hand, every meal, is how the practice adds up.
- Sharing a job
- Taking turns with you keeps the meal moving and keeps them in charge of their part.
- Eating well
- Enough actually gets eaten while they learn, so practice never costs them a meal.
What to look for
Watch for them doing more of the spoonfuls themselves as the week goes on.
A tip
This is about the spoon, not about how much gets eaten. Let them stop when they've had enough.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: do most of the feeding and let them hold their spoon
Harder: let them do more mouthfuls and fill in only when they stop
