Story Spoons
What you need
- four wooden spoons
- masking tape
- crayons
How to do it
- Stick a strip of masking tape on the back of each spoon and let your child draw a face on each one, with eyes, a nose and a mouth: three pigs and a wolf.
- Tell The Three Little Pigs together, with each spoon as a character. You hold the wolf.
- Let your child tell the next bit, moving the spoons. Ask what happens after the straw house falls down.
- Then let them make a new spoon character and tell a story of their own.
Why it matters
Holding the characters in their hands makes a story they know easier to tell, and then to change.
What they're learning
- Retelling a story
- What happens first, next and at the end, with the spoons as reminders.
- Talking for characters
- A squeaky pig voice and a gruff wolf voice.
- Making it their own
- Changing a story they know into a new one.
What to look for
Notice them giving each spoon its own voice.
A tip
Start with a story they know well. A new one works better once they're used to the spoons.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: tell it yourself and let them move the spoons and do the huffing and puffing
Harder: ask how the wolf feels at the end, and tell it again from the wolf's side
