Spoon Transfer
What you need
- large spoon
- two bowls
- dry cereal or pasta
How to do it
- Fill one bowl with cereal or pasta pieces.
- Set the empty bowl next to it.
- Show them scooping with the spoon and tipping it into the other bowl.
- Let them move everything back and forth.
Why it matters
Scooping and tipping without spilling trains the wrist control they'll use to feed themselves neatly.
What they're learning
- Wrist control
- Tipping the spoon just enough to drop the food without flinging it is exactly the motion they need to feed themselves without a mess.
- Hand-eye teamwork
- Watching the spoon, the bowl, and their own hand at once trains the coordination behind pouring their own water later.
- Bilateral coordination
- Holding one bowl steady while the other hand scoops teaches the two sides of the body to work as a team, which matters for cutting with a knife and fork one day.
What to look for
Watch for the amount of spillage shrinking each round as they slow their tip.
A tip
Do this one over a towel or outside — it's messy by design, so let go of the spills and just enjoy the focus it buys you.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use your hand to steady the bowl while they scoop
Harder: push the bowls further apart so they carry the loaded spoon a short distance
