Set Two Places
What you need
- two plates
- two cups
- two spoons
- table
How to do it
- Show them where your place and their place will go.
- Hand them a plate and ask them to carry it carefully to the table.
- Repeat with cups then spoons, one item at a time.
- Stand back and admire the table together before eating.
Why it matters
Carrying real (unbreakable) tableware without dropping it builds the steady hands and planning that mealtime routines run on.
What they're learning
- careful carrying
- walking steadily with something that could spill or drop builds the same body control used for carrying a full cup or a baby sibling's bottle later.
- one-to-one matching
- putting exactly one plate at exactly one place is an early form of matching numbers to objects.
- routine and ritual
- helping build the mealtime setup makes them feel like part of the family routine, not just someone who shows up to eat.
What to look for
Slows down and adjusts their grip on their own when something feels wobbly.
A tip
Use plastic or melamine plates for this one — it takes the pressure off both of you if something gets dropped.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just set out the spoons, skip plates and cups
Harder: set the table for the whole family, matching one of each item per chair
