Texture Basket Guess
What you need
- small basket
- cotton wool
- sponge
- spoon or brush
How to do it
- Gather 3-4 items with very different textures into the basket
- Cover the basket or have them close their eyes
- Let them feel one item and guess what it is before looking
- Take turns being the one who hides an item
Why it matters
Guessing an object by touch alone sharpens their sense of feel and builds early describing words.
What they're learning
- tactile discrimination
- telling objects apart by feel alone sharpens touch sense used later for things like finding keys in a bag
- turn taking
- swapping who hides the item practises waiting for a turn, a key skill for playing with other children
- descriptive vocabulary
- describing rough, soft or bumpy before guessing grows the words they use to talk about the world
What to look for
Watch for them pausing to feel carefully before blurting a guess, showing real thinking.
A tip
Start with items that feel very different from each other so early rounds feel like an easy win.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: let them peek while feeling, no guessing blind
Harder: add a fifth trickier item and describe it in words before guessing
