Bowl Drum Concert
What you need
- a few mixing bowls or pots
- a wooden spoon
- a whisk
- a phone or speaker for music
How to do it
- Line up two or three upturned bowls or pots on the floor.
- Show your toddler how to tap each one with the spoon and listen to the different sounds.
- Put on some music and bang along together, swapping the spoon for the whisk.
- Let them lead the tempo: fast, slow, loud, quiet.
Why it matters
Banging out their own beat helps a toddler feel rhythm in their body and start linking movement to sound, an early step towards language and music together.
What they're learning
- rhythm sense
- Banging along to music helps them feel a steady beat, the same skill that later supports clapping games, dancing and even reading rhythm in speech.
- cause and effect
- Hitting different bowls and hearing different sounds teaches them that their own actions change the world around them.
- wrist control
- Gripping and swinging the spoon builds the wrist strength they'll later use for scribbling and spooning food.
What to look for
Watch for them banging faster or slower to match the music, showing they're tuning into rhythm.
A tip
Keep the music at a gentle volume and let them choose which bowl to hit next rather than directing every tap.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just one bowl and one spoon so the choice is simple
Harder: line up bowls with different amounts of water inside for different pitches
