Sparkly Spotting
What you need
- a basket for the finds
- a big spoon
- a small unbreakable mirror
- a big plastic bauble with the cap and hook taken off
- a piece of shiny wrapping paper
How to do it
- Hold up the basket and say, "Let's find sparkly things!"
- Look round the room together and let your toddler spot each shiny thing and drop it in the basket.
- Point out sparkly things you cannot touch too, like fairy lights up high or the shine on a window.
- Sit down with the basket and look for your faces in the spoon, the mirror and the bauble.
Why it matters
Hunting for something shiny gives them a reason to look closely, and finding their own face in a spoon is a giggle every time.
What they're learning
- Looking closely
- Spotting shine on a spoon or a window takes careful looking.
- Describing words
- Shiny, sparkly and bright are words they learn by finding the real thing.
- Finding and carrying
- Walking round with a basket and filling it is a little job of their own.
What to look for
Watch for them tilting the spoon or the bauble to find their face, then laughing. Stay close, nothing in mouths.
A tip
Plastic baubles only, with the metal cap and hook taken off, and play away from the tree. Fairy lights stay up high, for looking at, not touching.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: put all the shiny things on one low shelf
Harder: ask them to find one thing that is shiny and one that is soft
