Here's Your…
What you need
- their cup, bowl and spoon at mealtime
How to do it
- At a meal, put each thing down in front of them and name it: "here's your cup."
- After a few days of this, start the words and pause: "here's your…"
- Wait a few seconds, then finish it yourself if they don't.
- Keep it light; it's a meal, not a lesson.
Why it matters
A phrase they hear every day, left unfinished, gives them an easy gap to fill with a word they already know.
What they're learning
- Finishing the phrase
- The gap at the end is made for a word they know.
- Everyday words
- Cup, bowl, spoon: words they need every day.
- Waiting for them
- A pause tells them it's their turn to talk.
What to look for
Watch for their mouth moving in the pause, even without a sound.
A tip
If a word comes out, however unclear, say it back clearly and add one more: "ball" becomes "big ball". Never ask them to repeat it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: keep naming every item with no pause
Harder: pause on the spoon and the bowl as well as the cup
