Carry The Cutlery
What you need
- clean spoons or forks
- drawer or tray
How to do it
- Stack a few clean spoons in your toddler's hands.
- Walk together to the cutlery drawer or tray.
- Let them drop the spoons in one by one.
- Repeat with a few forks if they want more.
Why it matters
Carrying items carefully from one spot to another builds concentration and a sense of finishing a job.
What they're learning
- Weight-bearing grip
- Holding a small stack without dropping it builds the hand strength they'll use later to carry a full cup or a stack of books.
- Sustained focus
- Walking a short distance while holding something carefully requires them to stay focused on one job through to the end.
- Sense of completion
- Dropping each spoon in one by one gives them a clear, repeatable finish line, which builds the satisfaction of a job done.
What to look for
Watch for them slowing their walk or holding their arms closer to their body when the stack feels wobbly — that's them self-correcting to avoid a drop.
A tip
Blunt spoons and forks only, and keep the walk short and obstacle-free so a stumble doesn't turn into a scattered-cutlery cleanup.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: carry just one spoon at a time
Harder: carry a small stack of three spoons without dropping them
