Cauldron Scoop and Count
What you need
- a big bowl of water, as the cauldron
- a big spoon or a slotted spoon
- two apples, cut in half
- a few dry leaves
- a second bowl
- a tray
How to do it
- Put the bowl of water on a tray on the floor and drop in the apple halves and the leaves.
- Give them the big spoon to stir the cauldron round and round while you say a silly rhyme together.
- Now scoop: let them fish out one apple half at a time and drop it in the second bowl, counting each one.
- Tip everything back in and stir again for another go.
Why it matters
Chasing a bobbing apple with a spoon is hard: it rolls away, so they slow down and steer. Counting each one into the bowl gives the numbers a real job.
What they're learning
- Spoon control
- Steering a spoon under something that floats away is the same wrist control they use to feed themselves.
- Counting
- Saying one number for each apple in the bowl joins the words to real things.
- Problem solving
- Pressing an apple against the side of the bowl to trap it is a trick they work out for themselves.
What to look for
Watch for them trapping an apple against the side of the bowl to lift it. Stay beside any water play, however shallow, and the cauldron is for stirring, not sipping.
A tip
Do it on a tray or a wipe-clean mat with a cloth nearby; cauldrons slosh.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: let them scoop with their hands or a cup instead of the spoon
Harder: ask for "two apples and one leaf" and see if they can fish out just those
