Whisper Messages
What you need
- two or three things to fetch, like a spoon, a sock and a soft toy
How to do it
- Sit in a circle with the family. Whisper a message into your child's ear, like "Fetch the spoon and give it to the person next to you."
- Let them carry the message out, then whisper a new one to the next person.
- Make the messages two parts long: "Touch your nose, then clap twice."
- Take turns sending the whisper, and see who can do the job without hearing it twice.
Why it matters
To catch a whisper they have to listen hard, then hold both halves of the message in mind until the job is done.
What they're learning
- Catching a whisper
- Every word of a very quiet voice.
- Two-part messages
- This, then that.
- Speaking softly
- Whispering the message, not shouting it.
What to look for
Notice them doing both parts of a message in the right order.
A tip
Some children find whispering tricky and say it out loud instead. A quiet voice counts.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use one-part messages, like "Clap your hands"
Harder: pass one message all the way round the circle and see how it comes out at the end
