Carry The Toolbag
What you need
- a small cloth bag or basket
- a wooden spoon
- a folded cloth
- a soft toy
- a low shelf or table
How to do it
- Fill the bag with a few household items like a spoon, a folded cloth and a soft toy.
- Ask your toddler to carry the bag from one room to another.
- Show them where to unpack it, one item at a time, onto the table or shelf.
- Praise each item they set down, then refill and repeat.
Why it matters
Carrying a bag full of odd-shaped things and setting it down safely builds the same grip, balance and follow-through they'll use packing their own school bag one day.
What they're learning
- carrying steadily
- Walking with a weighted bag builds the core balance behind carrying shopping or a school bag later.
- sequencing tasks
- Carry, arrive, unpack in order lays down the habit of following a job through to the end.
- helpful pride
- Being given a real job to do builds the confidence behind offering to help unasked as they grow.
What to look for
Watch for them gripping the bag handle firmly and toddling with purpose rather than dragging it.
A tip
Keep the bag light at first. Heavy or bulky items can throw off a new walker's balance.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use a lighter bag with just one or two soft items
Harder: add a short walk around furniture before unpacking
