Big Spoon, Small Spoon
What you need
- a big spoon and a teaspoon
- a bowl of rolled oats
How to do it
- Put a bowl of rolled oats between you with a big spoon and a teaspoon.
- Scoop with the big spoon and say 'big spoon, big scoop'.
- Scoop with the teaspoon and say 'little spoon, little scoop'.
- Let them choose a spoon and name it each time they switch.
Why it matters
Holding the two spoons one after the other makes big and little something they can feel in their hand.
What they're learning
- Size words
- Big and little said right next to two spoons they can hold.
- Scooping
- Loading a spoon and tipping it is careful wrist work.
- Comparing
- A big scoop and a little scoop side by side show the difference.
What to look for
Notice them reaching for the big spoon when they want more oats.
A tip
A tray under the bowl catches the oats that go flying.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just the big spoon, then just the little one
Harder: ask for 'the big spoon, please' and see which one comes back
