Rice Tray Diggers
What you need
- a big tray or tub of dry rice
- toy diggers and trucks, too big to fit through a toilet roll tube
- two scoops or spoons
- a plastic cup or two
How to do it
- Put the rice tray on an old sheet on the floor, with the diggers, trucks, scoops and cups beside it.
- When your child's friend or cousin arrives, give the site a job: dig a hole in one corner and build a hill in the other.
- With one digger, split the work: one builder scoops rice into the truck while the other drives the loads to the hill, then they swap.
- When the hill is done, ask them to show you round the site, then help tip the rice back into its tub.
Why it matters
A hole and a hill need digging and carrying at the same time, so the work splits into two jobs, and the swap halfway gives both a turn on the digger.
What they're learning
- Sharing a job
- One loads, one drives, then they swap.
- Scooping and tipping
- Filling the truck to the top and emptying it at the hill.
- Talking it through
- Telling each other where the next load goes.
What to look for
Notice them telling each other whose turn it is on the digger.
A tip
An old sheet underneath catches the spills. Rice is for digging, not eating, so stay close by.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: give each child their own digger and their own corner of the tray
Harder: add a road from the hole to the hill and drive the trucks along it
