Apple Taste Test
What you need
- two or three different apples, like a red one, a green one and a yellow one
- a plate and a knife for you to cut with
How to do it
- Put the apples in a row and look at them first: which colour, which is biggest, which is shiniest?
- Cut a thin slice from each one and lay it on the plate in front of its apple.
- Taste one at a time and talk about each: crunchy or soft, sweet or sour, juicy or dry?
- Ask them to close their eyes while you hand them a slice, and guess which apple it came from.
Why it matters
Three apples that look nearly the same turn out to taste different, and they get to be the judge with their own tongue.
What they're learning
- Tasting carefully
- Small bites, thinking about each one.
- Describing
- Crunchy, juicy, sweet, sour.
- Remembering a taste
- Which apple was that slice from?
What to look for
Notice them going back for a second taste before they decide.
A tip
You do all the cutting with a sharp knife, then put it away before the tasting starts. Thin slices are easiest to crunch; peel them if skins are tricky.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: two apples, a red and a green, and simply taste and talk
Harder: line the apples up from the sweetest to the sourest and see if you agree
