A Card to Post
What you need
- a sheet of paper folded in half
- chunky crayons
- a few stickers
- an envelope with a stamp
How to do it
- Fold a sheet of paper in half to make a card and say who it's for: 'this one's for Nana.'
- Let them draw and stick stickers all over the front and inside, however they like.
- Write the words they tell you inside, and let them add their own mark for their name.
- Slide it into the envelope together, then walk to the postbox and let them push it in.
Why it matters
Making something for a person they love, and then sending it off, turns a drawing into a message with someone at the other end.
What they're learning
- Mark making
- Every crayon line and sticker on the card is a choice about what goes where.
- Thinking of others
- A card for a named person gives the drawing a reason: someone is going to open it.
- Talking
- Telling you what to write inside is a toddler putting together their own message.
What to look for
Watch for them saying the person's name while they draw, or asking when the card will get there.
A tip
Put the stamp on before you set off and lift them up to the slot so they do the posting. If there's no walk today, the card can wait by the door.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hand the card over in person instead of posting it
Harder: draw the person the card is for on the front and talk about what they like
