Whisk Air Bubbles
What you need
- a whisk
- a couple of cups and bowls
- a jug of water
How to do it
- Half-fill a bowl with a little water.
- Hand your toddler the whisk and show them a quick stir.
- Let them whisk to make bubbles, adding a splash more water if it flattens.
Why it matters
Turning a whisk with two hands strengthens the wrist and hand muscles that later make holding a pencil or spoon much easier.
What they're learning
- wrist rotation
- Turning the whisk works the twisting wrist motion needed later for unscrewing lids and turning door handles.
- two-handed coordination
- Holding the whisk steady with one hand while turning with the other builds the coordination used for buttoning coats.
- cause and effect
- Seeing bubbles appear from stirring helps them understand that their actions change the world around them.
What to look for
Notice if they change their stirring speed on purpose to make more or fewer bubbles.
A tip
Stand this on a towel first, since a splash or two is part of the fun.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use a spoon instead of a whisk for an easier grip
Harder: add a drop of washing-up liquid for extra bubbles
