Up and Down Lines
What you need
- a chunky crayon
- a sheet of paper
How to do it
- Draw a line straight down the page while they watch.
- Hand them the crayon and let them have a go next to it.
- Draw a line across the page too.
- Take turns, however their line comes out.
Why it matters
Copying a straight line is one of the first shapes that comes around this age, and a turn after watching you is the easiest way to try it.
What they're learning
- Copying a line
- Down, then across: early shapes.
- Control
- Keeping a crayon going in one direction.
- Taking turns
- Your line, their line.
What to look for
Watch for them moving the crayon in the same direction as yours.
A tip
Let them hold it however it sits in their hand; there's no need to fix their grip at this age. Stay with them, and put the crayons away afterwards.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: draw along beside their scribble
Harder: try a line down and then across in one go
