Bath Toy Colours
What you need
- chunky toys for the bath in two or three colours
How to do it
- Float two or three bath toys in different colours. Anything that fits through a toilet roll tube is too small.
- Name each one as it bobs past: 'yellow duck', 'blue boat'.
- Ask for one by colour and cheer whichever one they pass you.
- Cover one with your hand and ask 'where's the yellow one?'
Why it matters
Bath time is already slow and close, which leaves room for a few colour words without adding anything new.
What they're learning
- Colour words
- Each toy gets a colour and a name, said together, again and again.
- Following a request
- Handing over 'the blue one' is listening and acting on what they heard.
- Grasping in water
- Catching a floating toy is trickier than it looks and good hand work.
What to look for
Notice them looking at the right toy when you say a colour, even before they reach for it.
A tip
Stay within arm's reach the whole time and keep the water shallow.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just name the colours as they play, with no asking
Harder: line the toys up on the edge of the bath and ask for one colour at a time
