Cornstarch Goop Tray
What you need
- cornstarch
- water
- shallow tray
How to do it
- Mix cornstarch and water in the tray until it's thick but pourable.
- Let your toddler press and drag fingers through it — supervise so it stays out of their mouth.
- Show them how it turns solid when squeezed and runny when still.
- Wash hands together when done; it rinses off with warm water.
Why it matters
Feeling a substance change from solid to liquid under their own hands builds early cause-and-effect thinking.
What they're learning
- Cause & effect
- Noticing the goop firms up under pressure and melts when still builds early scientific reasoning about how actions change materials.
- Hand strength
- Squeezing and pressing through thick goop works the same muscles used later for gripping crayons and cutlery.
- Sensory tolerance
- Handling an unusual, shifting texture builds comfort with the unexpected, which helps with new foods and textures too.
What to look for
Watch for them squeezing a fistful and opening their hand to watch it ooze — that's them testing the effect on purpose.
A tip
Lay a towel under the tray first; goop drips are easy to wipe off skin but sticky on floors.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: make a smaller batch in a bowl instead of a tray for a shorter session
Harder: hide a large toy in the goop for them to dig out
