Torch Under Blanket
What you need
- torch or phone light
- blanket
How to do it
- Drape a blanket loosely over you both.
- Switch on the torch and let it glow softly inside.
- Move it slowly across the fabric ceiling.
Why it matters
A dim, cosy light in a small space helps a toddler's nervous system settle before rest.
What they're learning
- Cause & effect
- Clicking the torch on and watching the glow appear teaches them that their actions change the world, the root of later button-pushing, switch-flipping curiosity.
- Visual tracking
- Following the moving light with their eyes builds the smooth eye movements they'll use for reading lines of text one day.
- Emotional regulation
- A dim, enclosed glow gives their body a physical cue to slow down, the same self-soothing skill they'll need at bedtime for years.
What to look for
Watch for them reaching to grab the torch and try the switch themselves — that's the cause-and-effect click landing.
A tip
Use a phone flashlight on low brightness so it's not too harsh this close to their face, and save it for the last 10 minutes before bed.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the torch still instead of moving it
Harder: let your toddler hold and aim the torch themselves
