What counts as no mess

Some days there is no capacity for a tray of flour or a basin of water, however good those are. No-mess activities are the ones that use dry, soft, whole objects, socks, cushions, a blanket, a book, a torch, so that when it ends the room is roughly as it was. They tend to be movement games or sit-down games, and a day at home can run on those two alone.

The other thing that keeps mess down is a rule that packing away is the last part of every activity. A basket for the socks, a spot for the cushions. Give the child the job and it becomes the finish rather than a chore.

Movement with nothing to sweep

A blanket over two chairs makes a tunnel, and crawling through it is the whole game. Lay a path of cushions across the floor and walk along it. Give a two year old a small backpack with a couple of soft toys inside and march round the house with it. None of this leaves anything behind that a cushion cannot fix.

Rolled-up socks are the best indoor throwing object there is. Into a basket, at a wall, across the room. They land quietly and they hurt nobody.

Sitting down with nothing to wipe

A basket of clean socks to pair up is a proper job for a two year old, and it saves you doing it. A board book with pages they can turn, a hand mirror to pull faces in, a clean sock on your hand as a puppet that whispers. Each of these holds a child for a few minutes and takes about ten seconds to put away.

A torch under a blanket is the quietest activity in the house and works at any age from one upward. Lie under it together and let them work out that the light goes where they point it. If they want something to do with their hands that is not a book, a clean sock makes a fine puppet and a soft toy can be tucked into a blanket and put to bed several times over. Both leave the room exactly as it was.

When you have had enough

The honest use of this list is the day after a messy one, or the evening when everything is already tidy and you would like it to stay that way. The activities below are the ones from the library marked no-mess, each with its own steps and a switch-up. There is a whole no-mess collection in the activity library too, if you want more than eight.

Try this together
