Puppet Story Den
Communication and LanguagePersonal, Social and Emotional DevelopmentExpressive Arts and DesignLiteracy
What you need
- a blanket
- two or three soft toys
- a board book
- a torch
How to do it
- Drape the blanket over a chair or table edge to make a low den.
- Bring the soft toys and book inside and let each toy 'read' a page aloud.
- Have the toys ask your toddler simple questions about the pictures.
- Finish by switching on the torch low and gentle for a soft, glowing end.
Why it matters
Watching a toy 'speak' the story encourages a toddler to answer back, which is some of their earliest real conversation.
What they're learning
- turn-taking talk
- answering the toy's questions here is the back-and-forth rhythm that grows into real conversation and classroom discussion.
- imaginative play
- making a soft toy talk and read is an early step into pretend play and, later, storytelling of their own.
- self-soothing
- ending in a dim, quiet den with soft light teaches a way to wind down that they can reach for long after toddlerhood.
What to look for
Notice them looking to the toy's 'face' and answering or pointing when it asks a question.
A tip
Keep the den low and open on one side so you can see them easily and they never feel shut in.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just one soft toy and skip the den, reading on your lap instead
Harder: let them choose which toy talks next and hold the torch themselves
