Teddy's Trick-or-Treat Trail
What you need
- three or four soft toys
- a basket
- some play food, as pretend treats
How to do it
- Sit the soft toys in different spots around the room and give your toddler the basket.
- Walk to the first teddy together and say "trick or treat!"
- Let the teddy give a pretend treat, then pop it into the basket and say thank you.
- Visit each teddy in turn and count what is in the basket at the end.
Why it matters
Saying trick or treat and thank you is the friendliest bit of Halloween, and doing it with teddies makes it a gentle, silly story they can run themselves.
What they're learning
- Pretend play
- Acting out a story with teddies lets them practise what happens next and what people say.
- Manners
- Saying hello and thank you at every teddy makes them a natural part of the game.
- Counting and carrying
- Collecting the pretend treats in the basket gives them something to count and carry.
What to look for
Watch whether they say the words themselves or wait for you. Both are fine, and the teddies can always say it first.
A tip
Give each teddy a different voice, even if it feels silly.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: set up just one teddy, close by, for one trick or treat
Harder: swap roles so they hand out the pretend treats and you come knocking
