From Book to Toy
What you need
- a picture book with animals in it
- a few soft toy animals to match
How to do it
- Put a few soft toy animals nearby before you start the book.
- When an animal comes up in the book, name it: "a cow!"
- Ask them to find the cow from the toys.
- Carry on reading and do the next one.
Why it matters
Hearing the word in the book and then finding the toy links the name to the real thing without pointing at either.
What they're learning
- Word to thing
- Going from a word to the right toy.
- Books
- Stories give new reasons to use words they know.
- Matching
- Picture and toy side by side.
What to look for
Watch for them holding the toy up next to the picture.
A tip
Say the name without pointing or looking at it; that's what makes it about the word. If they're stuck, point to help and try again another time.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use two toy animals that look very different
Harder: keep the toys in a basket across the room
