Menu Picture Point
What you need
- a cafe menu with pictures, or a picture book from your bag
How to do it
- Open the menu between you and point to a picture: "What's this?"
- Let them point and name things back to you.
- Ask them to choose what they would order for you, and for teddy.
Why it matters
Pointing at pictures and naming them builds vocabulary, and choosing for someone else is early pretend play.
What they're learning
- Naming things
- Saying the word for each picture adds to the words they use every day.
- Pointing
- Pointing to show you something is a way of starting a conversation.
- Making a choice
- Picking something for you or teddy is practice at deciding.
What to look for
Watch for them pointing to a picture and waiting for you to say what it is.
A tip
If the menu has no pictures, use any picture book from your bag. It works the same way.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you name each picture and let them point to it
Harder: ask questions about the pictures: "Which one is hot?", "Which one is the biggest?"
