Pinch and Push
What you need
- their small coat with big buttons
How to do it
- Use the same two words every time: "pinch", then "push".
- Say "pinch" as they take hold of the button.
- Say "push" as it goes into the hole.
- Keep the words the same, every coat, every day.
Why it matters
The same two words every time means they don't have to work out what's happening as well as what to do with their fingers.
What they're learning
- Knowing the steps
- The same words each time make the order clear.
- Pinching
- Taking hold of the button properly is step one.
- Pushing
- Getting it into the hole is step two.
What to look for
Watch for them saying the words to themselves as they go.
A tip
Use big buttons sewn firmly on, and keep loose ones away. Stay with them while they practise.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: say the words while you do it for them
Harder: let them do it without you saying anything
