Sponge Bucket Relay: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Sponge Bucket Relay

from 36 months · 30-40 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • two buckets
  • a big sponge each
  • a bowl of water to soak the sponges
  • masking tape to mark a line on a bucket

How to do it

  1. Put the bowl of water at one end of the garden and an empty bucket at the other, with a tape line halfway up the inside.
  2. Show them how to soak the sponge, run to the bucket and squeeze it out with both hands.
  3. Take turns running, or work as a team, to fill the bucket up to the line.
  4. Check the line every few runs. How many trips did it take?

Why it matters

A tape line halfway up the bucket gives all that running and squeezing a finish line of its own.

What they're learning

Running and carrying
Holding a dripping sponge on the move.
Squeezing hard
Two hands, every last drop.
Counting trips
How many runs to reach the line?

What to look for

Notice them squeezing harder at the bucket after seeing how little the last run added.

A tip

A warm day and old clothes are best. Stay beside them the whole time the water is out, clear the grass of anything to trip on, and tip it away when you finish.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: put the bowl and bucket close together and just carry and squeeze

Harder: carry the sponge balanced on their head, hands out to the sides
