Speckled Frog Hops: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Speckled Frog Hops

from 40 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • a long cushion as the log
  • a blue blanket as the pool
  • five soft toys as frogs

How to do it

  1. Lay the cushion as the log and the blanket a few hops away as the pool. Sit five soft toy frogs on the log.
  2. Sing Five Little Speckled Frogs together. On "jumped into the pool", your child takes one frog and hops on one foot to the pool with it.
  3. Count how many frogs are left on the log, and sing the next verse with that number.
  4. Keep going until the log is empty, then all the frogs hop back.

Why it matters

The song says when to hop and how many are left, so counting down and hopping come in the same verse.

What they're learning

Hopping on one foot
A few hops in a row from the log to the pool.
Counting back
Five frogs, four frogs, three: one fewer each verse.
Singing a whole song
Every verse from start to finish.

What to look for

Notice them singing the next number before you do.

A tip

Any soft toys can be frogs. Keep the floor between the log and the pool clear.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: jump on two feet, or hold your hand for the one-foot hops

Harder: move the pool one hop further away after each verse
