Scarf Streamer Dance
What you need
- a light scarf each
- music on a phone or speaker
How to do it
- Put on some music and give your child a scarf to hold by one end.
- Make big shapes together: circles, waves and zigzags, up high and down low.
- Change the music: slow and quiet for big slow waves, loud and fast for quick little wiggles.
- Stop the music now and then, and freeze like a statue until it starts again.
Why it matters
A scarf shows every move they make, so big arm sweeps and changes in the music can both be seen.
What they're learning
- Big arm movements
- Circles and waves from the shoulder.
- Moving to music
- Slow and soft or fast and loud, to match the song.
- Freezing on cue
- Stopping the moment the music does.
What to look for
Notice them changing their moves when the music changes, without being told.
A tip
Use a light scarf, keep it out of mouths and away from necks, and clear the space around you first.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: dance without the freezing and copy each other's moves
Harder: gallop or skip round the room as you wave, and freeze on one foot
