Scooter Delivery Round: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Scooter Delivery Round

from 36 months · 15-20 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • a scooter, trike or balance bike, and a helmet
  • a backpack
  • three soft toys
  • three small parcels: small toys wrapped in paper

How to do it

  1. On a flat, quiet path away from roads, sit the three soft toys along the edge, a few big steps apart.
  2. Pack the parcels in the backpack, helmet on, and send your child off on their delivery round.
  3. At each toy they stop, put a foot down, take out a parcel and deliver it, then steer round the toy and on to the next.
  4. At the end, ride back and count how many parcels were delivered.

Why it matters

Every delivery is a slow down, a stop and a push off again, and the parcels give each stop a reason.

What they're learning

Scooting and turning
Scooting along and turning round each toy.
Stopping and starting
A foot down at every delivery, then off again.
One parcel each
Every toy gets one, and they count them at the end.

What to look for

Notice them slowing down before a stop, not just at it.

A tip

Pick a flat path away from roads, driveways and slopes, keep the helmet on, and walk alongside within reach.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use one toy at the end of the path and one parcel

Harder: draw a picture on each parcel so they deliver it to the right toy
