Musical Statues: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Musical Statues

from 34 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • music on a phone or speaker
  • a clear patch of floor space

How to do it

  1. Put some music on and dance anywhere in the room.
  2. Stop the music without warning, and everyone freezes like a statue.
  3. Anyone who wobbles does a silly forfeit, like a lion's roar, then joins straight back in.
  4. Let them be in charge of the music while you do the dancing and freezing.

Why it matters

Freezing on the spot means listening hard and stopping a busy body on purpose, and being in charge of the music is the best bit.

What they're learning

Stopping on a signal
Hearing the music stop and freezing straight away.
Balance
Holding still mid-move, sometimes on one leg.
Following rules
Move when it plays, freeze when it stops, and take a turn at the music.

What to look for

Notice them reminding you of the rules when they are in charge, or catching you wobbling.

A tip

Nobody is ever out. A silly forfeit keeps everyone playing and heads off the tears.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: freeze together holding hands, and give a big warning before the music stops

Harder: call out a statue to be when the music stops: a tree, a rocket, a sleeping cat
