Hop Along the Line: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Hop Along the Line

from 40 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • masking tape for a line indoors, or chalk outside

How to do it

  1. Make a line on the floor with tape, or draw one outside in chalk, about five big steps long.
  2. Show your child how to stand on one foot and hop along beside the line.
  3. Count the hops to the end, then try the other foot.
  4. Add a tape cross halfway as a rest stop, where they can put both feet down.

Why it matters

A line gives the hopping somewhere to go, and counting the hops gives every try its own number.

What they're learning

Hopping
Taking off and landing on the same foot.
Balance
Arms out and eyes ahead to stay steady.
Counting
One number for each hop.

What to look for

Notice them holding their arms out to stay steady on one foot.

A tip

Hop on carpet or grass, in trainers or bare feet rather than socks on a smooth floor.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: hold their hand while they hop, or let them jump with two feet

Harder: hop to the end and back on the same foot, or hop from side to side over the line
