Pumpkin Shape Faces: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Pumpkin Shape Faces

from 38 months · 10-15 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • a few sheets of paper, orange if you have it
  • crayons

How to do it

  1. Draw a big round pumpkin on each sheet, or let your child draw the big round shape.
  2. Ask what shape the eyes should be: triangles, circles or squares? Let them draw them in.
  3. Add a nose and a mouth, happy, cross or surprised, naming the shapes as they go.
  4. Make a few different faces and ask how each pumpkin is feeling.

Why it matters

A pumpkin face is a circle with shapes inside, so naming shapes and feelings comes along with the drawing.

What they're learning

Drawing closed shapes
Joining the line up to make a circle or a triangle.
Shape names
Triangle eyes, a round nose, a square mouth.
Feelings faces
A smile or a frown changes how the pumpkin feels.

What to look for

Notice them joining up the line to close a circle or a triangle.

A tip

Big paper and chunky crayons make round shapes easier to close.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: draw the face shapes lightly and let them colour them in

Harder: ask for a face with exactly two triangles and one square, and count the corners
