Pack a Picnic Box: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Pack a Picnic Box

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • a plastic tub with a lid for each person
  • sandwiches made with bread, ready cut
  • fruit to choose from: an apple or a banana
  • a napkin each
  • a blanket

How to do it

  1. Lay out a tub for everyone and the picnic things beside them.
  2. Ask your child how many tubs there are, and let them put a sandwich in each, one for every person.
  3. Give them a choice of two for the fruit, apple or banana, then let them add a piece for everyone else.
  4. Pop in a napkin each, put the lids on, and carry it all out to the blanket in the garden or the park for lunch.

Why it matters

One of everything in every tub is counting with a reason, and choosing the fruit gives them a say in what they eat.

What they're learning

One for each person
A sandwich, a fruit and a napkin in every tub.
Choosing for themselves
Apple or banana: their pick.
Lids on and off
Pressing a lid down all the way round.

What to look for

Notice them checking each tub has a sandwich before the lids go on.

A tip

Make the sandwiches first and let them do the packing. If grapes or cherry tomatoes go in, cut them into quarters lengthways.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: pack two tubs, theirs and yours, and choose the fruit together

Harder: let them ask each person what they'd like and pack it to order
