Put the Shopping Away
MathematicsPersonal, Social and Emotional DevelopmentUnderstanding the WorldCommunication and Language
What you need
- a bag of shopping, with nothing heavy or breakable left in it
How to do it
- Put the bag on the floor and take things out one at a time together.
- For each one, ask where it lives: the fridge, the cupboard or the fruit bowl? Let your child carry it there.
- Count the things that went in the fridge, then the ones in the cupboard, and see which has more.
- Fold the empty bag together and put it away for next time.
Why it matters
Every packet has a home to be carried to, which means sorting and counting, and a lot of trips across the kitchen.
What they're learning
- Sorting
- Fridge, cupboard or fruit bowl.
- Counting
- How many things went in the fridge?
- Carrying carefully
- One packet at a time, two hands.
What to look for
Notice them knowing where something lives before you tell them.
A tip
Take out the glass jars, bottles and anything heavy first and put those away yourself, then hand over the bag.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you hand them the fridge things only
Harder: sort everything into three piles on the floor, cold, cupboard and fruit, before anything is put away
