Pick Your Snack
What you need
- two healthy choices, like an apple and a banana
- a plate
How to do it
- Put two healthy choices out on the side, like an apple and a banana.
- Ask your child which one they'd like, and why.
- Let them fetch a plate, put their choice on it and carry it to where you eat.
- Ask them to fetch something for you too, and tell you which one you're having.
Why it matters
Choosing between two good things gives them a real say, and fetching it themselves makes snack their job.
What they're learning
- Making a choice
- Picking one of two is a small decision that's theirs.
- Saying why
- "The apple, because it's crunchy" is a reason in their own words.
- Careful carrying
- Taking a plate across the room without anything sliding off.
What to look for
Notice them giving a reason for their choice, like "apple, because it's crunchy".
A tip
Only offer choices you're happy with, so any answer is a good one. Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes lengthways.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold one in each hand and let them point and name it
Harder: offer three choices and ask them to pick one for each person in the family
