Gingerbread Hunt
What you need
- five gingerbread people cut from brown paper
- a basket
How to do it
- Tell your toddler the gingerbread people have run away and are hiding somewhere in the room.
- Search together, high and low, under cushions and behind chairs.
- Each time they find one, pop it in the basket and count how many you have.
- When all five are home, let them hide them for you to find.
Why it matters
A hunt gets them moving, looking carefully and counting, and hiding them for you turns it into a game you take turns at.
What they're learning
- Looking carefully
- Spotting a little corner of paper behind a chair is close, careful looking.
- Counting
- One more in the basket each time links counting words to real things.
- Taking turns
- Hiding them for you to find is a turn of their own in the game.
What to look for
Listen for them saying a number as each one lands in the basket.
A tip
Start with them in easy places with a corner showing, then make it trickier as they get the idea.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hide them with an arm or a leg poking out where they can see it
Harder: hide them in two rooms and give a clue for each, like "near something soft"
