Chalk Stepping Stones
What you need
- chunky chalk
How to do it
- Draw a trail of big chalk circles on the ground, each a small step apart.
- Show them how to step from one stone to the next without touching the ground in between.
- Draw a couple of the gaps a bit wider so they have to jump.
- Let them draw an extra stone for you to step on.
Why it matters
Circles on the ground give each step somewhere to land, so stepping and jumping have something to aim at.
What they're learning
- Stepping on target
- Landing in a circle means looking where the foot goes.
- Jumping a gap
- A wider gap asks for both feet to leave the ground at once.
- Balance
- Pausing on one stone before the next is a small balancing moment.
What to look for
Watch for them looking at the next circle before they step.
A tip
Chunky chalk is easier to hold and less likely to snap. Stay beside them on the path and keep well back from any road or driveway.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: make the circles bigger and closer together
Harder: add a 'one foot only' stone, or a wiggly path that turns a corner
