Tape Shape Jump
What you need
- masking tape
How to do it
- Tape a big circle, square and triangle on the floor, each big enough to stand in.
- Jump into one and say its name: 'I'm in the square!'
- Call a shape and let them jump into it.
- Swap so they call the shape and you jump.
Why it matters
Jumping from shape to shape puts their whole body into the words circle, square and triangle.
What they're learning
- Shape words
- Hearing a shape name and finding it on the floor links word and shape.
- Two-footed jumping
- Taking off and landing on both feet is big, whole-body work.
- Listening and doing
- Waiting for the call before jumping takes a moment of self-control.
What to look for
Watch for them checking the corners of a shape before they jump.
A tip
Masking tape peels off most floors cleanly; a circle is easier to make from short straight pieces than one long strip.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: tape just a circle and a square
Harder: call two shapes in a row and jump through both
