Cloud Shapes
What you need
- a blanket to lie on
How to do it
- Spread a blanket on the grass on a day with some clouds about.
- Lie down side by side and look up.
- Point at a cloud and say what it looks like to you: a dog, a boat, a big sock.
- Ask what they can see, and watch the clouds change shape as they move.
Why it matters
Clouds don't have a right answer, so whatever they see is the right thing to say.
What they're learning
- Imagining
- Seeing a dog in a cloud is the start of pretend.
- Describing
- Saying what a shape looks like uses lots of words.
- Noticing change
- A cloud that was a boat and is now a blob shows that things move and change.
What to look for
Notice them pointing at a cloud before you do and telling you what it is.
A tip
Never look straight at the sun. Pick a spot in shade, or turn so the sun is behind you.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just watch which way the clouds are moving and say 'there it goes'
Harder: make up a little story about the cloud animal and where it's going
