Incy Wincy Fingers: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Incy Wincy Fingers

from 22 months · 5 min · Quiet & calm

What you need

  • a rug or cushions on the floor to sit on, facing each other

How to do it

  1. Sit facing each other, knees almost touching, and hold up your hands to see what theirs do.
  2. Sing "Incy Wincy Spider" slowly and walk two fingers up into the air together for the climb.
  3. Wiggle your fingers down together for the rain, then sweep both arms up and out for the sun.
  4. Climb again, slowly, with your fingers climbing side by side.

Why it matters

The song has the same actions every time, so the climb, the rain and the sun are easy to do together.

What they're learning

Finger actions
Walking two fingers and wiggling all ten, each in its place in the song.
Copying
Watching your hands and trying the same moves.
Song and action
The climb, the rain and the sun come round in the same order every time.

What to look for

Notice their fingers starting to wiggle before you get to the rain.

A tip

Sing slower than feels natural and make the finger actions big, so there is time to watch and copy.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: keep to the climbing fingers and sing just the first line

Harder: climb a bit slower or faster each time and let them set the speed
