Cars At The Window
What you need
- a window with a view of a street
How to do it
- Sit together at a window where cars go past.
- Say the colour of each car: 'red car', 'white car'.
- Pick one colour and count the cars of that colour as they pass.
- Swap to a new colour when they tire of that one.
Why it matters
Cars keep coming, so there is always another one to name, and the counting has no set end.
What they're learning
- Colour words
- Each car gets its colour, said as it passes.
- Counting along
- Adding one more every time a red car passes is counting with a reason.
- Watching and waiting
- Keeping an eye on the street for the next car is patient, quiet attention.
What to look for
Watch for them calling the colour before you do.
A tip
Buses, bikes and vans all count too if the street is quiet.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: just name the colours and skip the counting
Harder: guess which colour will come next and see
