Chair Crawl Under
What you need
- A low table or chair
How to do it
- Clear the space under a coffee table or low chair.
- Get down and crawl under it yourself first to show them.
- Invite your toddler to crawl under and back out again.
Why it matters
Ducking under low furniture teaches toddlers to judge their own body size and height, a skill called spatial awareness.
What they're learning
- Spatial awareness
- Judging whether their body fits under the table teaches toddlers to read gaps and heights, useful for ducking through doorways and climbing frames.
- Imitation learning
- Copying your crawl-under first builds the watch-then-do pattern behind learning to use a spoon or brush their teeth.
- Body control
- Lowering their head and shoulders on cue builds the fine motor control over their own movement that later helps them squeeze into a snug coat or car seat.
What to look for
Watch for them ducking their head lower on repeat attempts instead of bumping it, showing they're recalibrating.
A tip
Clear anything breakable off the table above first — a surprised head-bump under furniture is the fastest way to end the game.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: Use a chair with more headroom underneath
Harder: Add a cushion underneath they have to crawl over too
