Parking Spaces
What you need
- a sit-on ride-on toy they push along with their feet
- masking tape indoors, or chunky chalk outside
- three soft toys
How to do it
- Mark three parking spaces a bit bigger than the ride-on, using masking tape pressed flat on a smooth floor, or chalk on a flat path.
- Sit a soft toy at the front of each space: Teddy, Duck and Bunny.
- Say "Park next to Duck, please" and let them push their way over.
- Cheer every trip, wherever they stop, then ask for another space.
Why it matters
Getting the ride-on towards a space means pushing, steering and stopping all at once, and a toy waiting in each one makes it worth another go.
What they're learning
- Pushing along
- Feet working on the floor to move the ride-on where they want it.
- Steering
- Turning the steering to line up with a space.
- Stopping
- Feet down to stop beside a toy.
What to look for
Watch for the little shuffles back and forth as they line up in a space.
A tip
Choose a low, wide-based ride-on so their feet stay flat on the ground. Bare feet or non-slip footwear on a smooth floor, closed shoes on a hard path outside. You hold the chalk, and the tape comes up when the game ends.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: mark one big space and cheer for every trip
Harder: make the spaces narrower, so lining up takes a few shuffles back and forth
