Rope Line Balance Walk: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Rope Line Balance Walk

from 16 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • masking tape or a length of rope laid flat on the floor

How to do it

  1. Lay a straight line of tape or rope flat on the floor.
  2. Show your toddler how to walk along it, one foot roughly in front of the other.
  3. Let them walk the line back and forth, holding your hand if they wobble.
  4. Try adding a gentle curve to the line for variety.

Why it matters

Walking along a defined line challenges balance in a low-stakes, ground-level way that builds confidence for uneven surfaces.

What they're learning

Balance
Keeping feet close to a line trains the fine balance adjustments used later on curbs, steps, and playground equipment.
Foot placement
Watching and placing each foot deliberately builds the visual-motor planning behind careful walking.
Concentration
Staying focused on the line for a full pass builds sustained attention on a simple physical task.

What to look for

Watch for their arms coming out to the sides for balance — that's a normal, healthy sign they're actively balancing.

A tip

Keep the line on flat, non-slip flooring and stay beside them the first few passes.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: make the line short and hold their hand the whole way

Harder: add a curve or zigzag to the taped line
