Sock Duster
What you need
- a clean sock for their hand
- a soft cloth or duster for you
- a low table, chair or shelf to dust
How to do it
- Put a clean sock on their hand like a puppet.
- Wipe the top of a low table with your cloth and show them the dust on it.
- Let them wipe the table legs, a chair seat or a low shelf with their sock hand.
- Move on to the next room and dust one more thing there.
Why it matters
A sock on the hand turns dusting into something they can do too, and the dust on the sock shows them the job worked.
What they're learning
- Wiping
- A sweep of the arm across a surface, side to side.
- Copying a job
- Doing what they watched you do a moment ago.
- Words for home
- Table, chair and shelf, named as you dust each one.
What to look for
Notice them checking their sock after a wipe to look for dust.
A tip
Clear anything breakable or heavy off the low surfaces first, and keep cleaning sprays away: a dry sock does this job.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: dust one chair, sitting on the floor next to it
Harder: swap the sock for a dry cloth and let them wipe a whole low shelf
