Bring Me A Book
What you need
- their books, in a box or basket on the floor, or on a low shelf fixed to the wall
- a cushion or a blanket
How to do it
- Make a cosy den with a cushion and a blanket by the window, across the room from their books, where you can still see them and the books, and settle in.
- Call from there, "Can you bring me a book?" and stay put, watching while they choose.
- When they arrive with one, make room beside you and read it there.
Why it matters
A call from a cosy den turns fetching a book into a small adventure, and makes the story their idea.
What they're learning
- Asking for a story
- Bringing you a book is a request that needs no words.
- Fetching
- Going off to get a book and coming back with it.
- Carrying
- Two hands round a book on the walk back to you.
What to look for
Watch for the book they choose and how they hand it over: held out, dropped in your lap or opened ready.
A tip
Keep their books in a box or basket on the floor, or on a low shelf fixed to the wall, so they reach them without climbing, and keep the den where you can see them the whole time.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: make the den a few steps from their books, so the trip is a short one
Harder: make the den at the far side of the room, still in sight of their books and of them, so the trip there and back is longer
