Names on a Walk
What you need
- shoes for a short walk
How to do it
- Go for a slow walk down your road or to the park.
- Stop when they look at something and name it: "dog", "bus", "tree".
- Name it again when you see another one.
- Let them lead where they look.
Why it matters
What they're looking at is what they're ready to hear a name for, and a walk is full of things they'll see again tomorrow.
What they're learning
- Following their eyes
- Naming what they're looking at makes the word stick.
- Seeing it again
- The same dog or bus on the same walk gives the word another go.
- Out and about
- New places, the same words.
What to look for
Watch for them pointing and looking back at you to check you've seen it.
A tip
If a word comes out, however unclear, say it back clearly and add one more: "ball" becomes "big ball". Never ask them to repeat it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stick to one or two things they love, like dogs
Harder: wait before you name the second dog you see
